About Us

Dialectical Behavior Therapy National Certification and Accreditation Association (DBTNCAA) is a non-profit organization that promotes the evidence-based practice of DBT and defines excellence in our field through the recognition of quality, outcome-based DBT providers and programs. Certification and accreditation helps consumers, their families, and those who pay for DBT services choose providers and programs with confidence.

The face of DBT is diverse, with customized applications across populations of people and clinical settings. DBTNCAA is the only DBT certification organization to recognize the broad-based practice of DBT, including providers who choose to integrate their DBT expertise with other therapy orientations.

Further, DBTNCAA provides its members with free professional development tools, resources, and training. Proceeds from DBTNCAA membership and application fees go into the continued growth of our organization, its members, and its certified providers.

Our Mission and Philosophy

The mission of Dialectical Behavior Therapy National Certification and Accreditation Association (DBTNCAA) is to:

In doing so, DBTNCAA is guided by the American Psychological Association (APA) policy on evidenced-based practice of psychology. Evidence-based practice of psychology directs providers away from prescriptive and toward customized applications of therapies grounded in monitoring clinical outcomes.

While therapists need guidance by research evidence, including broad-based empirical findings, it is equally important to use therapeutic expertise to determine the applicability of research to clients based on their culture, characteristics, and preferences (APA, 2005). Real-world clients differ from research participants in meaningful ways, and community settings are different than research laboratories.

DBTNCAA is concerned that its certified providers’ DBT knowledge and expertise is balanced with the accountability of using practice-based data to monitor and improve the clinical outcomes of their clients. This philosophy distinguishes DBTNCAA from other DBT certification organizations.
